TRADEMARKS & LICENSING
Affinity Licensing is the official agency that licenses Georgia State University trademarks, service marks, trade names, designs, logos, seals and symbols. The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has adopted various distinct marks for use by Georgia State and provided authority to establish the licensing program to protect the university’s marks, control the quality of products with the marks and prohibit the unauthorized use of university marks on commercial and non-commercial products.
The licensing program is overseen by Athletics in conjunction with Public Relations and Marketing Communications. Georgia State is required to monitor and control uses of its marks to ensure compliance and protection under federal, state and international trademark laws.
In addition to the university and athletic logos and marks, the university oversees the rights to the following language:
- Georgia State UniversityTM
- Georgia State®
- Georgia State University Athletic AssociationTM
- PanthersTM
- PounceTM
- StateTM
- GSUTM
- Georgia State PanthersTM
- GSU PanthersTM
- Georgia State Football®
- The State Way®
Student organizations are not permitted to use university logos or registered and unregistered marks to create secondary logos or marks that include any existing GSU logos or marks. Thus, a university-registered name shall only be used as a suffix to a student organization’s name (Example of acceptable use: “ABC Club at Georgia State University”. Example of prohibited use: “Georgia State University ABC Club”).
Student organizations are not permitted to use university logos or registered and unregistered marks for the sale of items for any purpose, including for fundraising. Student organizations may only use university marks to promote school spirit via giveaways.
A 12 percent royalty fee will be charged for any items created for resale and any item using an athletics logo, regardless of whether the item will be for internal use or for resale.
As of July 1, 2019, university departments, faculty and staff will not be charged a royalty fee for a university logo item purchased for internal use and not for resale.
Any item that uses a university trademark, whether for commercial or non-commercial purposes, must be purchased through an officially licensed vendor.
Vendors who are not officially licensed can find instructions for becoming a licensed vendor here.
Promotional Materials and Giveaways
Promotional materials can create challenges because of the varying imprint sizes available. The logo and sub-brand lockups can get complicated in small spaces, so we’ve provided examples of executions that respect the university logos while representing units effectively. All promotional materials must be produced by a licensed vendor whether items are produced for giveaway or sale.
If you are having multiple items produced, the same setup will most likely not work for each item. Setups need to fit the imprint area of the item. The logo height should never be smaller that .625” on promotional items.

The flame or horizontal logos may be used on items where the imprintable area isn’t large enough to reach the minimum height required for the primary logo.

On shirts and other materials, please ensure there is at least half the height of the flame between the logo and a unit’s name.
University Logos
The university has several variations of the signature logos to meet different design needs.
