You will need to pay a $50 non-refundable application fee when you submit your application.
The application will not be processed until the fee is paid. If the fee is not paid by the application deadline, your application will not be reviewed. This fee is payable by credit card.
Application Fee Waivers
Ronald E. McNair Scholars will have the opportunity to obtain an application fee waiver once inside the application.
You will need to submit academic transcripts from each college and/or university attended regardless of whether or not a degree was conferred.
- Unofficial transcripts are sufficient for an admission decision. If you are extended an offer of admission, you will need to submit official transcripts before the start of courses.
- Documents such as self-printed academic histories, web-based academic evaluations, or anything handwritten are not acceptable for an admission decision.
You will need to submit a Resume/CV and a personal statement.
- The personal statement should summarize your relevant skills and experiences, describe your research and career objectives, address the fit between your goals and the graduate training offered by IBMS and address your view of the goals and benefits of interdisciplinary education in the Biomedical Sciences arena.
You will need to submit at least 3 letters of recommendation with your application. These letters should speak to your ability to be successful in a graduate program. Professional and academic letters are strongly recommended.
- On the "Recommendations" tab, click "Add Recommender."
- Complete the form, and click "Send to Recommender."
- Your recommender will receive an emailed link to complete the electronic recommendation.
Note: Use your recommender's institutional or corporate email address. Submissions from anonymous email addresses (Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo) may be subject to additional review.
You must submit GRE scores unless you qualify for and receive a GRE waiver.
- Submit GRE scores through ETS. Use Georgia State's GRE code: 5251.
- Unofficial GRE scores are sufficient for an admissions decision. If you are extended an offer of admission, you will need to submit official transcripts before the start of courses.
For more information on GRE waiver criteria, please take a look at the Application Tips at the bottom of this page.
International applicants may also be required to submit English Proficiency test scores. Please see the Application Tips at the bottom of the page for more information.
Are there any prerequisites that I need to complete before I am eligible to apply for admission?
A conferred bachelor's degree is the only requirement for applicants interested in applying for the doctoral program.
How will you evaluate my application?
Our admissions committee reviews each candidate’s entire application and weighs each piece equally, which we call a holistic review. We don’t eliminate applicants based solely on test scores and GPA. Students with lower GPAs or GRE scores can bolster their application by using their personal statement to explain why they earned the grades they did, including a resume that describes their research experience and having stellar recommendation letters.
What is the minimum GPA and GRE/TOEFL/IELTS score required for admission into the Ph.D. program?
Since each application undergoes a holistic review, we do not have required minimums.
How do I compare with previously accepted Ph.D. students in IBMS?
The average scores for previously accepted doctoral students are as follows:
|Cumulative Undergraduate GPA||3.41|
|Cumulative Graduate GPA||3.74|
|GRE (quantitative + verbal scores)||310|
Applying to Georgia State has never been easier, and this page provides application tips and additional guidance on GRE waiver requests and the optional writing sample.
This program requires a working knowledge of the application of biomedical sciences to a specific area. Applicants should use the resume/cv and personal statement requirements to thoroughly explain their laboratory experiences.
Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) Waiver Requirements
GRE scores (or an approved equivalent) are required for consideration of your admission into IBMS graduate programs unless you have been granted a GRE waiver.
Applicants interested in requesting a GRE waiver for the Ph.D. program must meet the following criteria:
- Completion of a terminal degree (Ph.D., MD, etc.) from a regionally accredited college or university in the past five years.
To request a GRE waiver, please send a waiver request to email@example.com, attaching your unofficial transcripts from each college/university attended, your current resume and any additional documents.
The Optional Writing Sample
The writing sample is not required for admission into the doctoral program, but it provides applicants with an opportunity to further strengthen their application and gain a competitive advantage.
This document should be a substantive body of work that exhibits your ability to synthesize ideas, concepts or theories, logically draw conclusions and defend them.
Here are a few examples of documents that can be submitted as a writing sample:
- General research paper
- Capstone project
- Master’s thesis
- Research proposal
- Article Review
- Lab Report
- Case Study
- Term Paper
Do's and Don'ts
- Submit your writing sample in English only.
- Double space your document.
- Spend some time reworking and proofreading your writing sample.
- Submit a writing sample longer than 20 pages.
English Proficiency Scores
In addition to meeting all other applicable requirements for admission, non-native speakers of English must demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency. Proof of English proficiency can be demonstrated through one of the following:
- Proof of baccalaureate or graduate degree completion inside (from an accredited institution) or outside the U.S. where English is the official language of academic instruction – see list of countries below
- TOEFL scores (paper or Internet based)
- IELTS scores
- Completion of a University System of Georgia approved ESL program
Any applicant whose country of birth is an English-speaking country is not subject to the English Proficiency requirement.
The full English Proficiency exemption list can be found on the Graduate Admissions website.
International Academic Credentials
IBMS does not require applicants to submit a professional course-by-course evaluation. Your credentials will be evaluated for equivalency in-house by the Graduate Admissions office.
Graduate Admissions will make every attempt to evaluate your credentials for U.S. equivalency. If they cannot clearly determine equivalency, a professional evaluation for degree-equivalency will be requested by email. Submit your documents well in advance of the deadline to allow time for evaluation. If your degree is not equivalent you will be ineligible for graduate admission. Our undergraduate programs may serve as an alternative.
International applicants need not submit financial documents, including proof of support or bank statements, during the application process. Upon admission, International Student & Scholar Services will request required documentation via iStart.
I am currently enrolled in the last semester of my degree program. Am I eligible to apply now?
